What type of client do you want? (and what type of client are you?)

The “Do it All for Me”

“I don’t wanna know how it’s done, just do it.”

This client expects magic and depending on who they’re working with, are used to things getting done without them having to put any thought into it. They do not care, in fact, how something gets done. Only that by the end of your time working together, they have something resembling their request.

Great money, often meaningless work.

The “Teach Me Everything You Know”

“Wait…how do you do this?”

While this is a fun client type especially if you like to teach, it’s also hell of a draining one. Boundaries? What are those? I know I hired you to help design my website but could you show me how to setup email templates? What’s the best social media strategy of 2022? Why do you like this video-editing app?

Fulfilling, but diminishing return on investment.

The “Support Me How You Can”

“Is this included in the scope of work?”

This is my favorite client type. They want your help and expertise and trust your recommendations without overstepping or over-scoping. They’re honest about where the boundaries lie and if they’re ever unsure, they ask.

Comfortable balance of revenue and personal satisfaction.

The truth is they’re all great client types at different times:

  • When I want a quick buck, the “Do it all for me” asks little questions and is fine with a good enough deliverable.
  • When I want to help, “Teach me everything you know” speaks to my soul. I’ll spend extra time with them because I cherish that curiosity in others.
  • When I want to build a relationship, “Support me how you can” is someone whose journey I want to be on, and who I want a part of my own. They’re my happy medium, the clients I trust and stay connected with even if it’s once a year. I also often negotiate tech discounts on their behalf because…why not?

Aim for the last and take others sparingly.

(I am admittedly, “Teach me everything you know.”)
